EEG FAQ

What does EEG stand for?

Electroencephalogram! EEG is much easier to say!

What is the EEG measuring more specifically?

We all have brain cells. In order to talk to one another, these brain cells send each other little electrical signals. For example, you may have heard that brain cells 'fire', which means sending electricity from one neuron to another. These electrical signals are happening all the time. The more neurons that 'fire' the more electricity there is that we can measure on the scalp.

Does the cap send anything into my or my child's head?

No. The cap is just recording brain activity. It is not sending anything into the head.

Does the cap have radiation?

No. The cap is just recording brain activity. It is not sending anything into the head.

When recording EEG, what do the squiggly lines mean?

The squiggly lines tell us that there is brain activity in the child's head. Besides seeing that there is brain activity present, we cannot determine anything else until the data are processed.

Can you tell what my baby is thinking from their EEG?

No. While we can see that the brain is active, we cannot tell what they are thinking specifically.

Will I learn about the results?

We hope to share group results from the study with you in the next couple years as we finish collecting and processing the data. If your visits involves a clinical interview, we can provide you feedback on that.

Is the cap clean?

Yes, the cap is disinfected between each use.

Can I get a picture of my child with the cap on their head?

Of course! You can take or we would be happy to take a picture for you!

Can I get a copy of the recording for my doctor?

The recording we are taking at your appointment is for research, not for medical purposes. Medical EEGs are different in a number of ways from the kind of recording we are doing today. Given that, your doctor would need to do a clinical EEG in order to tell you anything medical.

EEG Compatible Hairstyles

EEG Compatible Hairstyles

Since EEG needs a good connection with your scalp to "hear" your brain's electrical signal, hairstyles can affect how well we can measure the brain's signal. Please see our EEG brochure. Also, please check out our EEG page!

Heart Rate ECG Measure FAQ

What does ECG stand for?

Electrocardiogram.!It is a mouthful, so we just use ECG!

What is the ECG measuring more specifically?

An ECG is like a heart's "electrical microphone." It listens to the tiny electrical signals your heart makes every time it beats. In the KiND lab, we are interested in Heart Rate Variability (HRV). HRV captures the small changes in time between each heartbeat. We are also interested in measuring Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia (RSA). RSA is a special kind of HRV that happens when we breathe.

What does ECG involve?

ECG involves placing electrodes on the chest with adhesive to "listen" to the heart. You will also wear a thin band around your chest that measures breathing.

Do the electrodes send anything into my or mt child's body?

No. The electrodes do not send anything into the body. They are very safe to wear.

Why are we doing ECG?

We are interested in ECG to look at differences in a persons physiological reactivity  in different situations while experiencing different emotions.

Is it painful?

No. ECG is not painful. Sometimes the adhesive we use to stick the electrodes to the skin will cause some mild skin itchiness or redness. Removing electrodes can cause minor discomfort, though this is typically less painful than removing a band-aid.

Will I learn about the results?

We hope to share group results from the study with you in the next couple years as we finish collecting and processing the data.
